“I had cars worth over ₦500m in my lot, customers’ cars worth over ₦200m were also destroyed” – Car dealer recounts fire incident
A car dealer has recounted how a fire outbreak at his office destroyed vehicles worth over ₦700 million, including cars purchased by customers who had yet to collect them.
In a video shared online, the dealer said he closed his office at about 10 p.m. and later discovered the fire through his security cameras after receiving a call from his security guard at about 2 a.m.
He said he was shocked to see the fire spreading despite efforts to put it out using water and more than 10 fire extinguishers at the premises.
According to him, he immediately contacted the fire service and other emergency agencies for assistance, but it took about three hours for firefighters to arrive and bring the situation under control.
The dealer said the fire destroyed his office setup and vehicles valued at over ₦500 million. He added that more than 21 cars belonging to customers, worth over ₦200 million, were also affected.
He expressed particular concern for the customers who had paid him to purchase vehicles but had not yet taken delivery of them.
“I spent over ₦200 million to buy cars for them, and they could not be able to pick their cars again. They spent over ₦100 million, ₦80 million, and they won't be able to pick their cars again,” he said.
The visibly distressed dealer apologised to affected customers, saying he did not know what caused the fire and that his greatest concern was the loss they had suffered.
He also prayed for God to bless the affected customers financially and provide them with the means to acquire even more vehicles.

Finance Minister Taiwo Oyedele’s defence of President Asiwaju Bola Ahmed Tinubu's proposed $21.7 billion external borrowing plan raises questions that cannot be answered by describing debt as investment.
The minister says: “This is investment, not borrowing.” But money obtained from lenders and repayable with interest remains borrowing, whatever it finances. A productive investment can justify a loan; it cannot erase the liability.
Nigerians deserve clear answers.
First, where is the complete project-by-project account? The reported plan covers 46 projects across 11 sectors. Publish their locations, individual costs, implementing agencies, contractors where selected, procurement records and completion schedules. Nigerians must be able to examine what each dollar will purchase.
Second, what is the full cost of the loans? Oyedele highlights a proposed $5 billion World Bank component at an average interest rate of about 2.1 per cent. However, the reported indicative average rate for the commercial component is 7.8 per cent. How much falls into each financing category? What are the fees, repayment periods, grace periods, guarantees and conditions? An attractive rate on one component does not explain the cost of the entire package.
Third, how will Nigeria repay the loans? Publish the annual repayment schedule and the revenue assumptions supporting it. What happens if oil earnings fall, the naira weakens or projects suffer delays? A road may generate economic benefits without producing the foreign currency needed to service its loan. Where will those dollars and euros come from?
Fourth, what proves that these projects offer value for money? About $10.6 billion is proposed for transportation, including the Lagos–Calabar and Sokoto–Badagry highways and the Kano–Kaduna rail project. Publish the feasibility studies, engineering designs, independently assessed costs and projected economic returns.
