This October, I'm participating in the Breast Cancer Read-Along Challenge and reading every day to help raise funds for those affected by breast cancer.

After more than 40 years working in cosmetology, film, and education, I have had the privilege of knowing many breast cancer survivors. Their courage, resilience, and determination have inspired me more than words can express. I've seen firsthand how this disease touches not only those diagnosed, but also their families, friends, and communities.

Well... the day has finally arrived.

After countless conversations in my chair, months of planning, packing, cleaning, construction 🚧, selling, donating, and moving, today was our last day working in what was once our family building.

This little building has held so much of our family's story.

My mother-in-law and father-in-law owned it for many years, operating BrewJays, their beloved brew-on-premise business named after Jay. When Jason and I moved to Bellville, we worked alongside them for a time before eventually running Brother Buds Mattress Store together. Later, Jason continued working with his parents while pursuing his graphic design studies, and I returned to teaching hair while building a tiny makeshift salon in our home on the side.

Years passed, dreams grew, and eventually we were both ready to take a leap of faith. Jason opened JayBird Digital Arts, and I opened the Parlour. Within these walls, we built businesses, weathered challenges, celebrated victories, and formed friendships that became part of the fabric of our lives.

One of those friendships began in the most memorable way.

Very early in my salon days, a gentleman walked through the door and asked if he could get a haircut. Without even looking up, I replied, "I'm sorry, I don't style men's hair. This is a women's-only establishment."

There was a brief pause before he answered, "But you'd make an exception for me, right? Freddy Vette."

And just like that, a friendship began.

Over the years, Freddy became much more than a client. He became a dear friend to both Jason and me. He and Jason share so much in common, and I have always adored both him and his sweetheart.

So it felt wonderfully fitting that today, on our final day in this space, Freddy was my last client.

As the last haircut was finished and the day came to a close, it felt like more than the end of a workday. It felt like the closing of a beautiful chapter that has been decades in the making.

This building has witnessed family dreams, family businesses, friendships, laughter, challenges, and so many meaningful moments. It has given us far more than four walls and a roof. It has given us memories that we will carry forever.

And while there is certainly a little sadness in saying goodbye, there is even more gratitude.

Because this isn't an ending.

The Parlour is not closing. JayBird is not closing.

This is simply the beginning of a new chapter, in a new space that is already becoming just as special in its own way.

The story continues.

And for that, my heart is full. ❤️
