Ayurveda in Canada: Undifferentiated Authority, Public Protection, and the Case for Professional Regulation

Today, the Ayurveda Association of British Columbia is releasing a new position paper examining a fundamental question for the profession: how should Ayurveda be understood, represented, and governed in Canada?

Ayurveda has developed rapidly across Canada, but education, titles, scopes of practice, professional authority, and public-facing claims remain highly variable. Practitioners with very different levels and types of training can appear to the public to occupy essentially the same professional space.

Ayurveda in Canada examines this problem of undifferentiated authority and its implications for public protection, professional standards, education, scope of practice, and the future development of Ayurveda in Canada.

The paper argues that the issues now facing the field warrant formal consideration of a more coherent professional and regulatory framework.

Published on Ayurveda Day, it is intended to contribute to a serious public and professional discussion about what responsible institutional development of Ayurveda in Canada should look like.
