The Jamaica-Canada connection.
Another wave of Africans were brought to Canada by the British when the country was still a colony of Britain and France. This time, via Jamaica. The Maroons who fought the British in Jamaica entered into a treaty that would bring them back to what is known as Ghana today. On route some were abandoned in Nova Scotia to face Winter with the hope that their spirit would be broke .
Adding to the history described below: from the 50's to today, the Jamaican "Brain Drain" to Canada and the US continues. Educated professionals are the largest Carribean export, today.

Colette Alethia • Dementia Care Leader + Brain Health Advocate 🇯🇲🇨🇦 Our Jamaican-Canadian story goes back much further than the 1950s.
On July 22, 1776, historical accounts identify the arrival of Jamaicans in Halifax, Nova Scotia, where they came to help reinforce the province’s defences.
Then in 1796, Jamaican Maroons were brought to Nova Scotia. Some eventually left for Sierra Leone, while others stayed and became part of the history of Black Nova Scotia.
Fast forward to 1955, and another major chapter began: the West Indian Domestic Scheme, which brought Jamaican women to Canada to work as domestic workers.
These women faced racism and difficult working conditions, but they persevered. They built families, communities and opportunities for generations to come.
From Halifax to Toronto, from 1776 to today, Jamaican people have been part of Canada’s story.
🇯🇲 We didn’t just come to Canada. We helped build it.
Our history is Canadian history. ❤️🇯🇲🇨🇦 Reposted by: ShopMyJamaica.com
A Challenge
After the 2025 hurricane, rebuilding efforts included reinforcement of buildings and generating temporary housing.
Architects of Jamaica and other innovators in the construction industry, generate your idea for temporary shelter and reinforcing buildings. Ideally, the shelters should consider the climate and be able to expell heat and sewage, plus use readily available Jamaican produced materials.
