Miss Bee Haven Jamaica

It is easy to admire a flower for what it offers. The nectar. The pollen. The small visitors it welcomes.

Less attention goes to what sustains it. The roots beneath the soil. The rain it receives. The light it grows towards.

We can pay so much attention to what we have to give that we forget to make room for what we need.

A meal someone else prepares. A listening ear. A little help with something we have been carrying alone. A quiet moment in prayer before reaching for the next task.

Sometimes receiving feels harder than giving. We explain that we are fine. We put off the rest. We accept the kindness, then immediately wonder how to repay it.

But care does not always come with an invoice.

As October draws to a close, perhaps there is room to let someone be kind to you without rushing to earn it.

There is grace for the giver, too.

Looking back at these scenes brings back the uncertainty of Hurricane Melissa. Watching the weather. Waiting to see what the morning would bring.

A year later, I’m making room to remember, even as I notice what is growing today.

The garden has its own pace. There are things we can tend, but growth asks for patience, too. I’m grateful for each small sign of life, and for God’s grace through the waiting.

Thinking especially of those still living with the losses Melissa left behind. May we keep finding ways to care for one another. 💛🐝

Rain helps the flowers they depend on, but heavy weather can keep them from reaching those flowers. It’s a reminder of how much of their world, and ours, rests beyond our control.

So we care for what’s been entrusted to us, do what we can, and trust God with the rest. 💛
